A New Server

Great teams need great tools.
This month we implemented an amazing new tool.

One of the tools we use in our communications office on a weekly basis is our backup drive. It contains the archives of everything our team has worked on over the past 5 years as well as. all the footage & pictures from years of outreaches.

When we first got rolling 5 years ago we built the backup disk with 4 drives in a small desktop array. Knowing that spinning disks don’t last forever I’ve had a subscription to Backblaze.com to seamlessly backup all of our data to a cloud server. With that peace of mind we’ve been working away for the past few years.

One of the biggest problems came as our team grew. Over the past few years as our team grew the server has become a bottleneck for the team. While it works well for 1 or 2 people, when 5, 6 or more people try to work from it at the same time it becomes too slow to be effective. As we’ve seen our team of videographers and vfx artists grow the old drive started becoming an anchor.

A couple of weeks ago one of the 4 drives failed. Having the backblaze cloud backup saved us from a catastrophe but we knew it was time for an upgrade.

“Having the right tool for the job enables our team to work efficiently as our communications team grows”

After a year of waiting, we finally upgraded our system this month. I’m not a networking expert but after hours of research and talking to other media professionals we found a solution in a Synology rackmount server.

One of the best features of the new server is that we now have 8 drives and with a 10 Gigabit connection up from the 1 we had before we now have the capability to work multitudes faster and collaborate as a team on projects.
